Guy Maddin Collaborations
From 2000-2003 Deco Dawson collaborated with Guy Maddin on a number of his films, including the dynamic and multi-award winning short film The Heart of the World.
Deco was brought onto the projects to impart his stylistic handling of grainy Super8 photography which he had perfected in his first five films, as well as his now legendary rapid-fire "Soviet" inspired montage editing. Serving as co-cinematographer and editor, the Dawson/Maddin collaborations proved to be rather inspiring, leading Maddin down the path of Super8 photography and rapid-editing for the subsequent decade's worth of films.
As well as co-cinematographer and solo editor on the feature film Dracula; pages from a virgin's diary, Dawson also served as Associate co-Director, helping develop the film and being responsible for how the dance choreography was to translate onto film.
Dawson left this collaboration period behind in 2003 to further develop as a solo filmmaker. 2003 also marks Dawson's last film shot on Super8.
